Adult Book Club reads "The Handmaid's Tale"

In this cautionary dystopian tale, Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. In an age of declining births, women are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets where signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. Offred can remember the days before, when she lived with her husband Luke and her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now...

A bestseller and modern classic that is continuing to inspire readers, and recently adapted as a Hulu show, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is chilling and altogether convincing, at once a scathing satire, dire warning, and literary tour de force.  [adapted Amazon excerpt]
